Diözesanmuseum - Cathedral Treasury and Museum of the Diocese

The museum was founded in 1901 by Sebastian Mutzl, who was a collector of Christian art. Since 1982, the museum has been located in the rooms above the cathedral cloister, remodelled and rearranged by architect Karljosef Schattner.
Twelve exhibition rooms provide a comprehensive picture of the diocese’s history, covering more than twelve centuries, its leading figures and the art that originated here. Topics covered are the diocese and its bishops, abbeys, places of pilgrimage (including outstanding exhibits such as the so-called vestments of St. Willibald), the cathedral’s complex case history, the veneration of saints, the Passion of Christ, martyrs, the adoration of the Virgin Mary, magnificent goldwork (mostly from the cathedral), reliquaries and insignia, as well as late medieval tapestry dealing with the legend of St. Walburga.
