Jura-Bauernhof-Museum Hofstetten

This stately Jura-farmhouse in Hofstetten served as a home for farmers, domestic servants and livestock – horses, cattle, pigeons and bees – for more than 400 years.

Its building technique is characterized by the material obtained nearby. The farm consists of a house combining living quarters and stables, a Stadel (barn), an adjoining building and gardens. It is furnished with originals equipment and illustrates the way farmers used to live and work. After entering and crossing the “Denna” (vestibule), you get into the parlor with its cast-iron stove and into the “Rußkuchl” (kitchen) where you can see an open fireplace and the “Speis” (larder) with tools for rural housekeeping. Horses and the horse groom were also accommodated on the first floor. The tester bed in the bedroom on the second floor is a true gem; the inner courtyard is nowadays used for events such as the farmers’ market, the museum festival or the traditional “Moritatensingen” (street ballad fest).
