Jurassic World Museum "Jura-Museum"

The Jura-Museum at Willibaldsburg (castle and fortification named after St. Willibald) – picturesquely located above the Altmühl River - is one of the prettiest museums of natural history in Germany. The emphasis is put on the Solnhofen limestone fossils.
ATTENTION please: at present some parts of the castle are undergoing restoration works at present. The courtyard is closed. Only the botanical garden “Bastionsgarten” and the Museum’s area in the “Gemmingenbau” are open. At present visitors can access the museums and the botanical garden from the Mondscheinweg road. It is not possible to reach the castle by car and park there. The “Burgschänke” castle inn is closed. For further information please contact the security service at 0049-(0)8421-6029828.

Probably the most impressive fossil to be found at the Jura-Museum is one of the original archaeopteryxes, the centerpiece of the newly-arranged archaeopteryx room. In 1998, an excavation team from the museum stumbled across a sensational find, the Juravenator starki, the most well-preserved theropod in Europe. Apart from fossils, the museum hosts tropical miniature coral reefs. At the aquariums you can see beautiful reef corals, colorful butterfly fish and “living fossils” such as horseshoe crabs, nautiluses and grabs – sea dwellers that already lived in the region in the Jurassic age.
