Residence in Neuburg an der Donau
Count Palatine Ottheinrich (1502-1559) built this mighty Renaissance palace as a residence of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg. The Baroque eastern wing was added between 1665 and 1670, and today it is recognizable from afar thanks to its round towers.
The Residence stands out for two unique elements: the courtyard façade decorated in the graffito technique and the palace chapel (that once was a Protestant church) painted by Hans Bocksberger in 1543. The northern wing of the palace hosts a grotto Baroque structure of great value.
The Pfalz-Neuburg princes used the eastern wing of the complex both as a residence and to display their wealth and power. Today it is home both to the Palace Museum (open to the public) and to the State gallery of Flemish Baroque paintings “Staatsgalerie Flämische Barockmalerei”.
